Business: According to a new analysis, if India achieves its target of installing 500 GW of non-fossil energy on time, the country could reach the peak of coal emissions. This claim has been made in the report of Energy and Clean Air Research Center (CREA).

Major markets for coal based energy production
According to the report, China, India and Indonesia, which are the largest markets for coal-based energy generation worldwide, remain the main drivers of global carbon dioxide emissions since the Paris Agreement. If these three countries maintain their clean energy progress, they could reach the peak of their power-sector output before 2030. The combined contribution of these countries will be 73 percent of global coal consumption in 2024.

The country crossed the 50 percent mark before the deadline.
According to the study, India’s clean electricity emissions have increased rapidly. This includes adding a record 29 gigawatts of non-fossil capacity in 2024 and a further 25 gigawatts in the first half of 2025. The country has crossed the 50 percent mark well before the 2030 deadline. At the same time, with the rapid economic and population growth, the demand for electricity also continues to increase.

The country’s annual solar module capacity was 118 gigawatts by mid-2025 and is projected to reach 200 gigawatts by 2028, the report said. This will reduce dependence on imports and support clean energy goals.
