Oxford, UK: Researcher and social work professional Alex Sam presented his study on orphan care and family-based care at the 7th Global Conference on Children and Youth, organised in Oxford, United Kingdom, from 20 to 22 August 2026.

His research paper, titled “Orphan Care Versus Family Care: An Ideological Study on Children in Orphanages and Foster Care vs Families,” explores different models of care available to orphaned and vulnerable children.

Representing his association with the International Leadership Development Centre, India, Alex Sam shared his research with an international audience comprising researchers, academics, social workers and child welfare professionals.

The study looks at the way orphanhood has been presented through literature and examines the differences between traditional family environments, foster care and institutional care.

An important section of the research considers characters such as Oliver Twist, Jane Eyre, Huckleberry Finn and Harry Potter. Through these literary examples, the study explores the experiences of children who grow up outside conventional family structures.

The research considers how literature and cultural narratives can influence public understanding of orphanhood and child-care systems. It also examines questions of belonging, emotional support, stability and the social experiences of children living away from traditional families.

During his presentation, Alex Sam discussed the importance of developing child-care approaches that go beyond basic institutional support and provide children with stable relationships, emotional care and opportunities for healthy development.

He also highlighted the importance of research in creating practical solutions for vulnerable children. According to the perspective presented in the study, evidence-based policies, stronger family support and community participation can play an important role in child protection and welfare.

Alex Sam’s academic interests include social work, child welfare and family-based care systems, supported by an educational background in business administration and social work.

The Oxford conference provided an international platform for discussing contemporary issues affecting children and youth. Participants exchanged research findings and professional perspectives on child development, protection and welfare.

Alex Sam’s participation in the conference represents a notable step in his research and professional journey and provides an opportunity to bring discussions around vulnerable children and family-based care to a wider international audience.
