Business: There is a wave of IPOs in the Indian stock market. New IPOs are opening every week. According to IPO Central, 82 mainboard IPOs have been listed so far in 2025. About Rs 1.20 lakh crore was raised through these. There were 90 IPOs in the year 2024, out of which 71 listings were positive, while 19 listings were negative. The queue of upcoming IPOs is long.
So should one invest money in every IPO?
All that glitters is not gold and not every big IPO is profitable. The latest example is Tata Capital’s Rs 15,511 crore IPO. This IPO was subscribed almost twice in anticipation of better listing gains. Despite being a Tata Group company, it disappointed investors on the listing day. Tata Capital’s shares were listed on October 13, 2025 at only 1% premium i.e. Rs 330. Its issue price was Rs 326.
Greed for listing gains?
Well, 2025 was good in listing gains. Most of the companies were listed at a premium, yet remember that big IPOs like LIC and Paytm gave big lessons. LIC’s IPO came in May 2022. The price band was Rs 902 to Rs 949. It was listed with a discount of about nine percent. It took about two years to reach its listing price.
The IPO of Paytm’s parent company One97 Communications came in November 2021. The issue price was Rs 2,150, listed with a nine percent discount. Even after almost four years of listing, it has not been able to touch its issue price.
