T20 World Cup: UAE’s historic win, Namibia out of the tournament, these two teams qualified from Group A

Geelong: Mohammad Wasim’s all-round performance helped the UAE register their maiden T20 World Cup win after beating Namibia by seven runs in their last Group A match here on Thursday. The Netherlands benefited from the UAE win and they were able to make it to the Super 12 from Group A along with Sri Lanka. Namibia was a strong contender for a place in the Super 12 before the match, but now they have to look for a way out. UAE was already out of the race for Super 12.

Batting first, UAE won the toss and scored 148 for three with Wasim’s 50 off 41 balls and captain CP Rizwan’s 43 not out. In reply, Namibia could only manage 141 runs for eight wickets. Namibia had lost half their team within 10 overs but David Weiss kept their hope till the end. He scored 55 runs in 36 balls which included three fours and as many sixes. Wasim, however, gave the UAE a memorable win by dismissing Weiss in the last over. Weiss shared a 70-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Ruben Turpelmann (25).
