Sri Lanka SWOT Analysis: In the T20 World Cup, the Asia Cup will do wonders, where is the team lagging behind?

New Delhi: Sri Lanka was counted among the top teams in the world till 2015. The team reached the finals of the 2007 and 2011 ODI World Cups. Also played the title match of 2012 and 2014 T20 World Cup. Then the process of retirement of veteran players started. It became difficult for Sri Lanka, playing consecutive final matches, to reach the knockouts of the ICC tournament. They also started getting consecutive defeats against teams like Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.

But in 2022 the story is different. Sri Lanka made a strong comeback after losing to Afghanistan in the first match of the Asia Cup. The team became the champion by winning 5 consecutive matches. They defeated India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Now Sri Lanka is being considered a big contender in the T20 World Cup.

Sri Lanka team: Dasun Shanaka (Captain), Danushka Gunathilaka, Pathum Nisanka, Kusal Mendis (WK), Charith Aslanka, Bhanuka Rajapakse (WK), Dhananjaya De Silva, Vanindu Hasaranga, Mahesh Thekshana, Jeffrey Vandersay, Chamika Karunaratne, Dushmantha Chamira (Subject to Fitness) , Lahiru Kumara (under fitness), Dilshan Madushanka, Pramod Madushan.

Strengths: Batting and All-rounder

Sri Lanka has more than one T20 specialist batsman. Bhanuka Rajapaksa had shown a wonderful game in the Asia Cup. In the opener, they have Pathum Nisanka and Kusal Mendis. Apart from this, the team has many such players, who can do wonders with the ball as well as with the bat. The biggest name in this is that of Vanindu Hasranga. Thanks to him, the team came out of the difficult situation and won the title of Asia Cup.

Captain Dasun Shanaka is also a great batsman to bowl in any conditions. Dhananjaya de Silva can also bat in the middle order as well as bowl in the over. This is the reason why the team is considered dangerous.

Weakness: Lack of experience

The biggest problem for Sri Lanka is the lack of experience. In the Asia Cup, Pramod Madhushan and Dilshan Madushanka showed an amazing game while debuting. But he does not have international cricket experience. Under pressure conditions these players can disintegrate. If Sri Lanka has to do better in the T20 World Cup, then the experienced players will have to give the responsibility.

Opportunities: Opportunity to get lost fame

Sri Lanka’s team performed amazingly in the Asia Cup. Now if she repeats this performance in the T20 World Cup, she will once again regain her old fame in world cricket. All the major teams have directly qualified for the Super-12 in the World Cup. At the same time, Sri Lanka have to play group round matches as well. After that, once again you will have a chance to make your mark by doing wonders.

Threats: Australian pitches

Sri Lanka won the Asia Cup title in the UAE. The pitches there are very similar to Sri Lanka. But the situation in Australia is not like this. There will be bounce in the pitch and it will not be easy for the team’s batsmen to score runs here. Sri Lanka has played 132 international matches in Australia so far, in which the team has got only 35 wins. He was defeated in 90 matches. The team has won only 6 in 14 T20 Internationals. The team depends a lot on the spinners and the pitches in Australia do not help the spinners much.
