Shiva Thapa Beat Suleman Baloch

Birmingham: Veteran Indian boxer Shiv Thapa made a stellar start to his Commonwealth Games campaign by defeating Suleiman Baloch of Pakistan to enter the pre-quarterfinals of the 63.5kg category. Thapa made it to the last eight of the welter weight category after winning a one-sided match 5-0. Thapa, a five-time Asian Championships medalist, was technically much better than Baloch and delivered tremendous punches.

The former World Championships bronze medalist showed tremendous agility inside the ring. At one point, Baloch even went ahead to punch him but Thapa agilely backed away and the Pakistani boxer fell. Veteran Shiv Thapa (63.5kg) would like to register a Commonwealth Games medal this time around.

The 28-year-old boxer has five Asian Championship medals to his name. He did not participate in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Olympian Ashish Kumar (80kg), last-time bronze medalist Mohammad Hussamuddin (57kg) and Asian Championship gold medalist Sanjeet (+92kg) are also title contenders.
