Retail Inflation: Retail inflation increased in June for workers associated with agriculture and rural sector

Retail inflation for agriculture and rural workers rose to 6.43 per cent and 6.76 per cent, respectively, in June due to higher prices of certain food items.

In June last year, retail inflation was 3.83 per cent for agricultural workers and 4 per cent for rural workers. The All India Consumer Price Index (CPI-AL) for agricultural laborers stood at 1,125 points in June 2022, while the Consumer Price Index (CPI-RL) for rural workers stood at 1,137 points. On an annual basis, both are marginally higher. At the same time, in May, CPI-AL was at 1,119 points while CPI-RL was at 1,131 points.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Labor Ministry said, “The Consumer Price Index based inflation for agricultural and rural workers stood at 6.43 percent and 6.76 percent, respectively, in June, 2022. In May 2022 it was 6.67 and 7 per cent respectively.

According to the latest official data, food inflation for agricultural laborers and rural laborers stood at 5.09 per cent and 5.16 per cent, respectively, in June this year. This is higher than 2.67 per cent and 2.86 per cent respectively recorded in the year-ago period.

According to the statement, the major contribution towards the increase in the general index of agricultural laborers and rural laborers came from the food group to the extent of 3.69 points and 3.79 points respectively. This was mainly due to increase in prices of various commodities including rice, wheat-flour, jowar, maize, milk, meat, fresh fish, poultry, dry chillies, mixed spices, vegetables and fruits.

In the case of agricultural labourers, 19 states showed an increase of 1 to 10 points in the index. Tamil Nadu topped the index table with 1,299 points while Himachal Pradesh was at the bottom with 884 points. In respect of rural laborers, 20 states showed an increase of 1 to 10 points in the index. Tamil Nadu tops the index table with 1,289 points while Himachal Pradesh is at the bottom with 935 points. The highest increase in the Consumer Price Index for agricultural laborers was in Kerala and the highest increase for rural laborers was in Madhya Pradesh.
