New Delhi: PT Usha, popularly known as Udanpari, delivered her first speech in Parliament on Wednesday. Udanpari said that now the country needs to emphasize on medical and sports science in sports. Significantly, the Narendra Modi government at the Center had appointed Usha as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha a few days ago.

During the discussion on the Usha Anti-Doping Bill, he said that all competitions should be brought under the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). He called for greater attention in sports medicine and science to help players recover from injuries. Usha said the country ranks third in terms of the number of persons whose tests for steroids came back positive and were punished for doping.

Usha said, doping has become a big problem
He said, ‘We have not yet given proper attention to doping in our country. Earlier this problem was limited only to the senior level, national level but now it has reached the junior level, college and district level. This is a matter of serious concern which needs to be resolved immediately. Usha said that there is a need to pay more attention to sports medicine and sports science in the country. He said that the leading countries in sports have given adequate support to the sports medicine system which was lacking in India. Usha said, “The new generation of players are now getting better coaches, coaching, diet, exercise and rest facilities, but there is one department which needs more attention and that is sports medicine and sports science. ‘

Usha made a big demand to increase the game

Usha said that injuries are an integral part of sports and the Department of Sports Science and Medicine has an important role to play in helping sportspersons recover from injuries. Usha said, “Unfortunately in our country this branch is still in its nascent stage. We need to pay immediate and special attention to this area. She said, ‘It is time to become self-reliant and I suggest that it should come under the self-reliant India initiative’. Regarding doping, he said that the dangerous situation can be controlled to some extent with the help of law but more effective measures are needed to create awareness about the problem.

Usha said, “There is a need to create awareness about the misuse of excellent performance enhancing drugs and there should be no delay in timely action and appropriate sanctions against those who report positive after use of steroids and such substances.” Along with this, the activities of the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) should be expedited and it should be given freedom to work without any hindrance, he said. He said that both NADA and Delhi-based National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) should be given the necessary financial independence. Usha also called for bringing all competitions under the supervision of NADA. He said that if the country follows all the scientific procedures, then in the next ten years India will become one of the top sports countries in the world.
