Prices of food and daily consumption items soften, WPI declines to 0.13% in September

Business: A slight decline was seen in the wholesale inflation rate in the month of September. During this period, there was a softening in the prices of food items, fuel and manufactured goods. Due to this, the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) decreased to 0.13 percent. This was confirmed in the government data released on Tuesday. The wholesale inflation rate was 0.52 percent in August and 1.91 percent in September last year.

“Wholesale inflation will remain positive in September 2025 due to increase in manufacturing prices of food products, non-food items, transport equipment and clothing,” the Industry Ministry said in a statement. According to Wholesale Price Index data, prices of food items showed a decline of 5.22 percent in September. Its prices had decreased by Rs 3.06 in August. During this period, a decline was seen in the prices of vegetables.

Vegetable prices declined by 24.41 percent in September. In August it was 14.18 percent. In case of manufactured products, inflation declined to 2.33 percent. Whereas in August it was 2.55 percent. Fuel and electricity witnessed negative inflation or deflation of 2.58 per cent in September, compared to 3.17 per cent in the previous month.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had kept the benchmark policy rates unchanged at 5.5 per cent earlier this month, keeping in mind the retail inflation rate. According to official data released on Monday, retail inflation fell to an 8-year low of 1.5 percent in September.
