ODI Cricket: It is a tedious format, it is being dragged… the great player demanded to end ODI

London: England’s star all-rounder and Test captain Ben Stokes has retired from ODI cricket. He has won the world cup for the country. South Africa refused to play ODIs on Australia tour. Because of this, questions are being raised on the future of ODI cricket. Now former Pakistan captain and the first bowler to take 500 wickets in ODIs, Wasim Akram says that ODIs should be removed from the cricket calendar now. He has suggested to the ICC and other cricketing bodies that ODIs should be abolished.

ODI being dragged on
Wasim Akram believes that ODI cricket is being dragged right now. T20 is easy and tiring for ODI players too. He said on The Telegraph Vaughan and Tuffers Cricket Club podcast, ‘T20 is very easy, four hours of play is over. Leagues around the world, there’s a lot of money – I think it’s part of modern cricket. Be it T20 or Test cricket. One-day cricket is like dying.

He further said – It is very tiring for a player to play ODI cricket. After T20, ODI cricket seems like it is going on day by day. So the players are focusing more on the shorter format and the longer format on Test cricket.

Opinion: Retirement of Ben Stokes doesn’t surprise you
Stadiums don’t even fill
Wasim Akram, who was once the highest wicket-taker in ODIs, believes that even stadiums are not filling up during ODI cricket. He also supported the retirement of Ben Stokes from ODI cricket. Akram said, ‘His decision that he is retiring from ODIs is very sad but I agree with him. Even as a commentator, ODIs are now just a stretch, especially after T20s. I can imagine myself as a player. 50 overs, 50 overs, then you have to do pre-game, post-game, lunch game.

Akram has described Test cricket as his favorite format. He believes that this format gives real identity to the player. He said- I have always given priority to Test matches. ODIs used to be fun but there were Test matches where you were recognized as a player.
