One thing was being said ever since Neeraj Chopra, one of the most successful athletes in Indian history, qualified for the finals of the World Athletics Championships. That is, he will face a tough competition from Grenada’s Anderson Peters in the final. If there is any thorn between Neeraj and Gould, it is Peters. Something similar was also seen. The Indian javelin star had a best throw of 88.13m, while Peters made his debut.
Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra became the second Indian and the first Indian male athlete to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships, winning a silver in javelin throw with a throw of 88.13m. The only medal for India at the World Championships was won the bronze medal in long jump by Anju Bobby George in Paris in 2003. Chopra, who started with a foul, made a brilliant comeback with throws of 82.39 in second attempt, 86.37 in third and 88.13m in fourth attempt, his fourth best performance of the season. His fifth and sixth attempts were fouls.
Grenada’s Anderson Peters won the gold with a throw of 90.54m, while Czech Republic’s Yakub Valdesh got the bronze with a throw of 88.09m. India’s Rohit Yadav finished 10th with a best throw of 78.72m. Chopra, who won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics last year, is the first Indian after shooter Abhinav Bindra to win an individual Olympic gold.
Peters started with 90.21m and followed it with throws of 90.46, 87.21, 88.11, 85.83m. His gold was assured after five attempts, but his sixth throw of 90.54m was his best. Chopra debuted in Group A qualification and threw a throw of 88.39m, which was the third best throw of his career. Defending champion Peters finished first in Group B with a throw of 89.91m.
Chopra’s best individual performance is 89.94m. He played in the 2017 London World Championships but could not qualify for the final. He missed the 2019 World Championships in Doha due to an elbow operation. Chopra had beaten Peters twice this season while Peters was victorious in the Diamond League in June. Peters has now thrown more than 90m throws six times in a season while Chopra is yet to cross the hurdle. Rohit finished sixth and 11th overall in Group B with a throw of 80.42m. His season-best performance of 82.54m, which he achieved last month in the National Inter-Province Championship, won the silver medal.
