India’s star wrestler Naveen won the gold medal in men’s 74 kg freestyle wrestling at the Commonwealth Games. He trounced Pakistan’s Soorma wrestler Muhammad Sharif Tahir 9-0 in the title bout. In this way it was India’s 12th gold. They took a 2–0 lead against the Pakistani wrestler in the first round and then registered a resounding victory, ending the lead 9–0 in the second round.
Naveen had put pressure on the Pakistani wrestler from the very beginning by taking the lead. Tahir, on the other hand, looked under tremendous pressure and could not recover till the last. The Indian wrestler took points one after the other, while the opposition wrestler could not earn a single point.
Just earlier, Tokyo Olympic silver-medallist Ravi Kumar Dahiya won the gold medal in the men’s freestyle 57kg final by beating his Nigerian rival Velson Abikevenimo 10-0 in a spectacular fashion. Dahiya, a three-time Asian champion and bronze medalist at the World Championships, started cautiously as he tried to gauge his opponent’s strength.
Both the players failed to score any points in the first minute. The Nigerian, however, started the attack and tried to grab Dahiya’s leg. The Indian wrestler easily foiled his attempt.
