Jailer 2’: Rajinikanth Returns as ‘Tiger’ Muthuvel Pandian in Nelson’s Much-Awaited Sequel

Superstar Rajinikanth and director Nelson are reuniting for Jailer 2, the sequel to the 2023 blockbuster. Produced by Sun Pictures, the film promises to continue the thrilling saga of the iconic character, Muthuvel Pandian.

Nelson first teased the idea of a sequel during an event in 2024, and the makers have now made it official. On Pongal (January 14, 2025), a video announcement set the internet abuzz. The teaser features Nelson and composer Anirudh Ravichander enjoying their time in Goa while a news broadcast warns of an approaching cyclone in Chennai.

In his signature witty style, Nelson jokes about how five cyclones have passed and Donald Trump has returned as U.S. President since his last film. However, their brainstorming session takes a dark turn when they witness a brutal attack carried out by a shadowy figure. The teaser dramatically reveals the attacker to be none other than Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the retired jailer known for his fierce reputation.

In the first installment, Muthuvel Pandian came out of retirement to save his son from a mafia entanglement. The sequel hints at even more intense action and gripping storytelling. Anirudh Ravichander returns to compose the music, while Kalanithi Maran continues as the producer.

Jailer marked Nelson’s debut collaboration with Rajinikanth and premiered on August 10, 2023. Featuring standout performances and cameos from Shivarajkumar and Mohanlal, it became the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year. The antagonist role, played by Vinayakan, also received widespread acclaim.

The original movie boasted a stellar ensemble cast, including Ramya Krishnan, Tamannaah, Vasanth Ravi, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa Menon, and Sunil. Cameos by Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Jackie Shroff, Kishore, and Makarand Deshpande added to its star power.

Meanwhile, Rajinikanth is currently filming Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. This project, also produced by Sun Pictures, features an impressive cast including Akkineni Nagarjuna, Sathyaraj, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, and Soubin Shahir.
