India in WTC: Why did Team India gain in the World Test Championship when Pakistan beat Sri Lanka

New Delhi: The World Test Championship table (WTC points table) has changed a lot due to the spectacular victory of Pakistan (Sri Lanka vs Pakistan) over Sri Lanka on Wednesday in the Galle Test. Babar Azam’s team successfully chased down 342 runs with an extraordinary four-wicket win over Sri Lanka, boosting their chances of playing in the final of the World Test Championship next year.

The win helped Pakistan go ahead of Sri Lanka and move to third place in the World Test Championship table with 58.33 per cent, with only South Africa (71.43 per cent) and Australia (70 per cent) now leading. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, slipped three places to the sixth position in the table with a win-loss percentage of 48.15. As a result, India improved one place to fourth (52.08 per cent) and West Indies to fifth (50 per cent).

A win in the second Test against Sri Lanka would see Pakistan rise to the top of the rankings against South Africa and Australia, while a loss would move Babar’s side to fifth. Sri Lanka can finish third in the table if they win the next match by a huge margin. Also, winning the second Test can level the series.
