Bengaluru: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) cannot take a call on whether the team will tour Pakistan for the 2023 Asia Cup, Roger Binny said on Thursday as it is up to the government to make such a decision. Speaking at an event organized by the Karnataka State Cricket Association here, Binny said the BCCI is yet to approach the government to travel to Pakistan next year, but it is for the central government to decide the matter ultimately.
Binny said, ‘It is not the decision of BCCI. We need government approval to leave the country. Whether we are leaving the country or teams are coming into the country, we need approval. Once we get the green signal from the government, we go according to it. We cannot decide on our own. We have to depend on the government. We have not approached the government yet.
The Asia Cup is scheduled to be played in Pakistan in September next year which will precede the ODI World Cup in India. BCCI secretary Jay Shah had recently said that the Indian team would not travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup next year but would rather play the tournament at a neutral venue. Binny’s remarks came after Shah’s statement.
On Thursday, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said that the Indian team would need approval from the Home Ministry to travel to Pakistan. Frustrated by this, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday requested the Asian Cricket Council to convene an emergency meeting. The PCB said such statements could divide the Asian and international cricket communities and could also affect Pakistan’s visit to India for the 2023 World Cup.
Pakistan toured India in 2012 for a six-match limited-overs series, but there has been no bilateral cricket between the two countries in the last 10 years. Both the teams play each other only in ICC and Asian Cricket Council tournaments.
