New Delhi: Harry Singh, son of former Indian fast bowler RP Singh Sr., has got a place in the England Under-19 team. The English team has to play the match against Sri Lanka Under-19. Father may have been a fast bowler, but Harry is a batsman. He opens the innings for the English county side Lancashire Second XI. Even before Harry, many Indian-origin players have played cricket for other countries.
Regarding the selection of his son, RP Singh said, “A few days ago we got a call from the ECB that Harry has been selected for the England U-19 team, which will play the Sri Lanka U-19 team at home.” Talking further to the Indian Express, he said- It is not easy, to reach the top level, you need luck as well as a lot of runs. I have seen many cricketers in the 90’s who used to do well in domestic cricket but when they represented the Indian team they were very unsuccessful.
Not many opportunities available for India
This is not the RP Singh you are thinking of. Former fast bowler RP Singh Sr has played two ODIs for India. He played his first match against Australia in 1986 in Hyderabad. He did not get a chance in Team India after playing the second ODI in Rajkot in the same year. He used to play domestic cricket for UP. He had 26 wickets in 21 List-A matches and 150 wickets in 59 First Class matches. He has also played the role of an umpire in three women’s ODIs.
Due to not getting much opportunities in international cricket, RP Singh went to England in the 90s. There he coached the Lancashire County Club and the England and Wales Cricket Board. He has also played Under-19 cricket for Lancashire.
