CWG 2022: Vijay wins bronze after Sushila Devi's 'silver' in judo, India gets 8th medal

Indian judo player L Sushila Devi has suffered a defeat in the final of the women’s 48kg category at the Commonwealth Games. She was defeated by South African Judoka Michaela Whiteboot to win the gold medal. This was India’s third silver in CWG, while 7th medal overall. Shortly after this, Vijay Kumar Yadav won the bronze medal in the men’s 60 kg. In this way the number of medals of India has now increased to 8.

Sushila was defeated by South Africa’s Michaela Whiteboot in 4.25 minutes in a very close match in the final. Both judo players were unable to score any points in the regular time of four minutes. Whiteboot then won the match by collecting golden points. On the other hand, Yadav defeated Petros Christodolides of Cyprus by scoring points from Ippon.

Sushila also won silver medal in 2014 Commonwealth Games Glasgow. Sushila secured her place in the finals by defeating Priscilla Morand of Mauritius from Ippon, while she defeated Harriet Bonface of Malawi in the quarterfinals.

In the men’s 60kg repechage, Yadav defeated Dinlan Munro of Scotland to make it to the bronze medal bout. Yadav was defeated by Joshua Kaz of Australia in the quarterfinals.
