Chinappa reaches quarterfinals of squash women’s singles
India’s veteran squash player Joshna Chinappa defeated New Zealand’s Caitlin Watts 3-1 to reach the quarterfinals of the women’s singles at the Commonwealth Games. Joshna, an 18-time national champion, won 11-8, 9-11, 11-4, 11-6. She will now face Canada’s Holly Naughton. Naughton defeated Efa Ageman of Malaysia 3-0. Joshna, who was trying to win the first Commonwealth Games gold, was 3-5 in the first set but after leveling 8-8, she won 11-8. Watts came back after winning the second set but Joshna did not give him a chance in the third and fourth sets.
India among other sports on the third day of Commonwealth Games
Badminton: The Indian badminton team, which has already booked a place in the quarter-finals, continued its stellar performance by defeating Australia 4-1 in the final Group A match of the mixed team competition. The defending champions India, which registered impressive 5-0 victories against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, suffered their only defeat in the women’s doubles match.
Lawn Ball: The Indian men’s team of Dinesh Kumar and Sunil Bahadur defeated England to reach the quarter-finals of lawn ball. Dinesh Kumar (skip) and Sunil Bahadur (lead) registered a 18-15 win. Both were leading 10-5 after the eighth end and dashed hopes of the England pair’s comeback. The Indian pair were defeated by Malaysia 17-14 in the opening game on Friday but they beat the Falklands Islands 36-4 and the Cook Islands 15-8. They will now face Northern Ireland in the quarter-finals.
Gymnastics: Indian gymnast Yogeshwar Singh finished 15th in the men’s all-round final of the artistic gymnastics event. The gymnast from Haryana, who has participated in the World Championship three times, scored a total score of 74.700 in the event. Yogeshwar was the only Indian male gymnast to qualify for the all-round final.
Cycling: India’s top cyclist Ronaldo Leightonjam lost to Australia’s Matthew Glatzer in the pre-quarterfinals of the men’s sprint event. Ronaldo’s teammates David Beckham (10.120 sec) and Esso Alben (10.361 sec) finished 18th and 23rd respectively in the qualifying rounds.
