CWG 2022: After waiting for 5 days, Pakistan gets gold, Noah Dastgir Butt becomes National Hero

Birmingham: Pakistan has finally got the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games (CWG 2022). Like India, Pakistan also got the first gold in weightlifting. After remaining empty handed for the first 5 days, Nooh Dastagir Butt won the nation gold in the 109+ kg event on the sixth day of the Games on Wednesday. This was Pakistan’s second medal. Earlier, Shah Hussain Shah had won bronze in Judo. This medal was also received on the sixth day itself.

405 kg lifted
Noah Dastgir Butt lifted 173 kg in the snatch. This is also a Commonwealth Games record. After this, he lifted 232 kg in his second attempt in clean and jerk. In this way, he won the gold medal by lifting a total weight of 405 kg. Along with the snatch, he also holds the Commonwealth record for clean and jerk and overall weight lifting. This is only Pakistan’s second gold in weightlifting in the history of Commonwealth Games.

Bronze to India
India had to be content with bronze in the same event. Gurdeep Singh of India won the bronze medal by lifting a total of 390 kg including 167 and 223. Australia’s David Littie, who lifted 414 kg at the 2020 Commonwealth Championships, finished second. Here he could lift only 394 kg.

Noah becomes national hero
With winning the gold medal, Noah has become a national hero in Pakistan. He has an influx of congratulatory people on social media. The whole country including former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi is congratulating him.
