Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Xinjiang province this week amid global concerns about the detention of more than one million Uighur Muslims. Xi also inquired about the history of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC) engaged in defending the forward areas.

China’s official Xinhua news agency reported that Xi described Xinjiang as an important region and hub in China’s program to build ports, railways and power stations connecting it from Central Asia to Eastern Europe.
