Business: Tata Trusts has approved a possible third term for Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran. This marks a change in the group’s long-standing retirement policy. Chandrasekaran’s second term will end in February 2027. Then he will be 65 years old. By the way, Tata executives step down from executive positions at the age of 65. However, he can continue to hold non-executive positions till the age of 70 years.
The extension of Chandrasekaran’s tenure will not only reflect his capabilities and the confidence placed in him by Tata Trusts, but will also reflect the direction of the Group, charting a bold new path under his leadership. Holding company Tata Sons will formally consider the proposal passed by the trust. This is the first time that one can continue to hold a full executive position in Tata even after retirement age. The proposal to extend Chandrasekaran’s tenure was put forward by Noel Tata and Venu Srinivasan in the trust meeting on September 11. The proposal was approved unanimously. Chandrasekaran got a second five-year term in February 2022. Chandrasekaran first joined the board of Tata Sons in October 2016. He was appointed chairman in January 2017. There are two factors behind Chandrasekaran’s third consecutive term in the group. To maintain continuity of operations, it was felt that executive leadership was necessary to complete projects like chips, batteries for electric vehicles and Air India.
Income doubled in 5 years of Chandrasekaran’s leadership
Under Chandrasekaran’s leadership, the Tata Group almost doubled revenues, more than tripled net profit and market capitalisation. The revenue of listed and unlisted entities in 2024-25 was Rs 15.34 lakh crore. Net profit was Rs 1.13 lakh crore. However, the group’s capitalization declined by Rs 6.9 lakh crore in a year to Rs 26.5 lakh crore by October 10, 2025. Tata Sons’ assets increased from Rs 43,252 crore in 2018 to Rs 1.49 lakh crore.
