Cabinet Decision: Rs 1.64 lakh crore package for the revival of BSNL, Cabinet approves

The Union Cabinet has approved a package of Rs 1.64 lakh crore for the revival of state-run telecom company BSNL. Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnav has said that till now the network from district to block is managed by BSNL and the network from block to panchayat is managed by BBNL.

The government has approved the merger of BBNL and BSNL so that there is no problem in coordination between the two telecom companies and for the revival of BSNL. Union Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has said that we are confident that this decision of the government will help in taking broadband service to every nook and corner of the country. Along with this, the Union Cabinet has also approved the project to take 4G service to all the untouched villages of the country through Universal Service Obligation Fund at an estimated cost of Rs 26,316 crore.

The Union Minister has said that this project will provide 4G mobile services in 24,680 untouched villages of remote and inaccessible areas. There is also a provision to cover 20% additional villages in the project. In addition, 6,279 villages with only 2G/3G connectivity will also be upgraded to 4G.
