Table of Content

Business: Dr. Jeladhara Sobhanan, a native of Thiruvananthapuram and working at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, is gaining global recognition in the field of nanotechnology. His research work spans health, environment, life sciences to industrial technologies, and he has received accolades from the world’s leading scientific conferences and research institutions.

Dr. Sobhannan received his early education from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pattam and obtained a master’s degree in Chemistry from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. He did research work at the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune and the University of Hyderabad and holds a PhD in Environmental Materials Science from Hokkaido University, Japan. Completed. He has been honored with many prestigious awards for his remarkable contribution in the field of research.

State-of-the-art nanodevice developed for cancer treatment
Dr. Shobhanan’s most notable research work is based on a novel nanodevice combining a cancer-targeting light-activated molecule and a highly sensitive oxygen sensor. The device offers 270 times greater light sensitivity than existing technologies, allowing more effective detection and treatment of cancer cells. This technology is currently in the patent process and is being considered a major innovation in light-activated cancer therapy.

Liquid biopsy technique developed for early detection of cancer
Offering new hope in the early detection of cancer, Dr. Shobhanan has developed a liquid biopsy platform that is capable of detecting cancer even with only 1 to 10 circulating tumor cells per milliliter of blood. For this remarkable innovation, he was awarded the Chemistry Presentation Prize by the Japanese Photochemistry Association (JPPA) — an award he was selected from among 260 researchers from around the world.

Research on safety and environmental impacts of nanomaterials
Dr. Sobhannan’s work on safety and environmental aspects of nanotechnology is equally important. One of his studies, which featured on the cover of the prestigious journal Nanoscale, showed that some nanomaterials, particularly those used in electronics and medical imaging, can release toxic heavy metals when exposed to light. This study is now being used to set standards for the safe design and disposal of nanomaterials.

Innovation for energy, water purification and industry
Dr. Shobhannan’s work spans advanced drug delivery systems, stability improvement of perovskite nanocrystals, development of water purification technologies, and preparation of safe nanomaterial frameworks for industrial use. His research papers have been published in leading journals such as ACS Nano, Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews, and The Chemical Record.

ray of hope for the future
With two patent applications, international awards, and global research collaborations, Dr. Jeladhara Sobhannan is not only making India proud but also revolutionizing the fields of health, environment, and industry through nanotechnology. His work is becoming a source of inspiration for the next generation of scientists and researchers.
