Achinta Shiuli went through rigorous training at the Achinta Sai Center NSNIS Patiala for the Commonwealth Games and continuously improved herself. His life-long hardships and intrinsic motivation, honed over the years, were reflected in his performances in Birmingham. At the age of 10, a resident of Dhulagarh in Howrah, he used to go to the gym with his brother Alok for training and used to work hard without resting a single day in a week.
Brother had to give up weightlifting after father’s death
Achinta used to do very easy exercises in the beginning, but later he started lifting. Achinta’s passion and discipline was influenced by the circumstances at home. His father used to work as a laborer to support the family. After his father’s death in 2013, his brother Alok quit weightlifting. His mother did sewing and other work to keep the house in order. Achinta stuck to his passion and quietly focused on his lifting.
Achinta is so determined about her game, she said that nowadays everyone is focused on the phone. You need to have a goal in life. Many guys go to the gym to impress the girls. I wanted to move on because my family situation was not very good. I knew there would be a lot of challenges to face and so I tried to improve step by step.
Achinta participated in the national event for the first time in 2013 in Guwahati and finished fourth. The 2018 Khelo India Youth Games gold medalist won medals in both junior and senior categories on the big stage at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, Apia, Samoa in July 2019. Achinta broke six national weightlifting records, including three in the senior group, to win a silver medal in the men’s 73kg category at the Junior World Championships in Tashkent last year. Also in Tashkent, he became the 73kg champion at the Commonwealth Championships at the end of last year.
