The government does not consider the rate of inflation in the country to be abnormal. It was claimed that the increase in the prices of wheat and rice in the country is normal. If there is any abnormal increase in the prices of food grains, the government will intervene in the market. Union Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey said that there is sufficient stock of food grains in the government godowns. Wheat-Rice is not lacking in anything. If needed, it will be launched in the market. Speaking at the press conference, he said that the prices of food items are not above normal. It cannot be called unusual.

The Food Secretary said that the wholesale price of wheat as on October 14, 2021 was Rs 2,331 per quintal. Earlier in 2020, this price was Rs 2,474 per quintal on the same day. Therefore, it is not appropriate to compare the increase in wheat prices in the current year with that of the previous year. This should be compared with the prevailing prices in 2020. The wholesale wheat prices on October 14 this year increased by 11.42 per cent as compared to 2020 and stood at Rs 2,757 per quintal. Retail wheat prices increased by 12.01 per cent to Rs 31.06 per kg.

The Food Secretary said that this increase is in line with the increase in Minimum Support Price, fuel and transport and other expenses. Nothing to worry about now. The government has a satisfactory stock of both wheat and rice in its godowns. The reason for this is more procurement than is required by the government for Public Distribution System (PDS) and other welfare schemes.

Food Corporation of India (FCI) Chairman Ashok KK Meena said the wheat stock with the government was 2.27 lakh tonnes as of October 1, against the buffer norm of 205 lakh tonnes. At the same time, the stock of rice stood at 205 lakh tonnes against the buffer norm of 103 lakh tonnes. He said that even after supply of free food grains for Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, National Food Security Act and other welfare requirements, the estimated stock of wheat and rice by April 1, 2023 would be much higher than the normal buffer norms.
