Ben Shikongo: Same attitude, same speedy balls… a glimpse of legendary Henry Olanga in the Namibian bowler

New Delhi: A fast bowler made his debut for Zimbabwe in 1995 at the age of 19. The name was Henry Olanga. He was the first black player to play international cricket for Zimbabwe. Even though his international career was of 80 matches, but during this time he earned a lot of name. He was instrumental in Zimbabwe’s team victories against India and Pakistan. Olanga had also troubled the entire Indian team including Sachin Tendulkar on several occasions.

At the age of 19, a fast bowler made his debut for Namibia in 2019. The name is Ben Shikongo. Like Olanga, Ben is also black. In the first match of T20 World Cup 2022, Namibia made a big upset by defeating Sri Lanka. This Shikongo took 2 wickets for 22 runs in the spell of 3 overs. It also had a maiden over. He first dismissed opener Pathum Nisanka. Then on the very next ball, Danushka Gunathilka was also run.

Henry Olanga did something similar against India in the 1999 World Cup. He took three wickets in an over and India lost the match. There is another similarity between the two bowlers. Both have excellent inswing. A fan on social media made Shikongo to Tulana Olanga. She wrote – Shikongo reminds me of Olanga from Zimbabwe.
