Asia Cup: Shakib Al Hasan to be Bangladesh’s captain in Asia Cup, leading batsman out injured

Dhaka: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed its main all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan as the captain of the T20 team for the upcoming Asia Cup, New Zealand tri-series and T20 World Cup. The Asia Cup will be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Australia will host the T20 World Cup in October-November. The BCB made the announcement after weeks of uncertainty as Shakib was asked by the board to choose either to play for Bangladesh or to maintain a partnership with BetWinner News, a ‘betting company’.

Shakib eventually terminated the deal with the company. He was appointed the captain of the Test team in June following the ouster of Mominul Haque. BCB announced a 17-man squad for the Asia Cup to be played from August 27. Bangladesh made several changes to their T20I squad for the Asia Cup, with Liton Das being ruled out of the tournament due to injuries.

Middle-order batsman Sabeer Rahman has made a comeback in the team while Mushfiqur Rahim has also made a comeback. Shoriful Islam, Munim Shahriar and Najmul Hossain Shanto did not find a place in the team. Nurul Hasan has also been kept in the squad despite a finger injury and the BCB said they are expecting an update from him on August 21.

Bangladesh has reached the final thrice in the last four Asia Cups, but lost each time. However, his recent form has not been good. The team had lost both the ODI and T20 series on the Zimbabwe tour.

Bangladesh team is as follows
Shakib Al Hasan (Captain), Anamul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Afif Hossain, Mosaddek Hossain, Mahmudullah, Mehdi Hassan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Hasan Mahmood, Mustafizur Rahman, Nasum Ahmed, Sabbir Rahman, Mehdi Hasan Miraj, Ibadat Hossain, Parvez Hossain Emon, Nurul Hasan, Taskin Ahmed.
