Curtzen, who had a passion for cricket since his youth, was a clerk in the South African Railways. He used to play cricket while working. He later became an umpire in 1981 and made his international debut eleven years later with the match between India and South Africa in Port Elizabeth. Kurtzen made his Test debut in 1992 in the Boxing Day Test match between South Africa and India in Port Elizabeth. He played a record 209 One Day Internationals and 14 T20 Internationals.
Rudy Kurtzen umpired in 331 matches in international cricket, with the last Test match being Australia vs Pakistan which took place at Lord’s in 2010. One of the most popular faces of the game then said that he will miss the longest format the most. He told Sky Sports in an interview, ‘This morning I thought I would have a nice and easy day. It’s an amazing game and I was so honored to be a part of it and I will definitely miss it’
