Birmingham: Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Indian team defeated South Africa 3-2 to enter the final of the men’s hockey event of the Commonwealth Games (CWG 2022). This is the third time that the Indian men’s hockey team will play the final of the Commonwealth Games. The Indian team kept the pressure on the opposition team throughout the match. However, the South African team gave a tough challenge, but failed to deceive the Indian team.
World number five India was given a tough challenge by 13th-ranked South Africa for a full 60 minutes. South Africa defeated New Zealand in Pool A to reach the semi-finals. For India, who remained unbeaten in the league stage, Abhishek scored in the 20th minute, Mandeep Singh in the 28th and Jugraj Singh in the 58th minute.
On the other hand, Ryan Julius scored for South Africa in the 33rd minute and M Kasim in the 59th minute. In the last moments, the South African team tried its best to score, but there was no break in the Indian defense. With this victory, India’s golden era seems to be returning. Team India’s eyes are completely fixed on the gold medal.
India has not won a gold medal in the men’s hockey event of the Commonwealth Games till date and all the 6 gold have been in Australia’s name. India won silver medals twice in 2010 in Delhi and in 2014 in Glasgow, while the last time India had lost the gold coast. The final will be played on August 8.
