Talking to Cricket Australia, Ponting said, ‘If I were a selector, I would definitely pick a player like Tim David in my team. He is a player who has the potential to win you the World Cup. David is not a mediocre player to just make his way into the team. He is a big level player.
Former captain Ponting also compared Tim David to the late Andrew Symonds, who died in a car accident earlier this year. Ponting included Symonds in his team in the 2003 World Cup played in South Africa and he surprised everyone by playing an explosive innings of 143 runs in the opening match itself. This year, Australia won the title by defeating India in the final under Ponting’s captaincy.
Symonds played for Australia in 26 Tests and 198 ODIs between 1998 and 2009. He was one of the best all-rounders in the world in his time.
Ponting said, ‘I see a glimpse of Symonds in David. If you give a chance to a player like this, he has the potential to win you tournaments. I know the current Australian team has some great players in the middle order but the kind of game that Tim has played in the last two years is no match for him.
