7th consecutive ODI defeat for West Indies

The Indian team was definitely playing on Caribbean soil, but the Queen’s Park Oval was like a stronghold for them. The Indian team had won eight of the last nine ODIs here. One match was washed out due to rain. India last lost to West Indies here in 2006. On the other hand, this is West Indies’ overall 7th consecutive One Day International defeat. Although this time she definitely played the full 50 overs.

India’s top order
Caribbean captain Nicholas Pooran won the toss and called India to bat. Gill, playing the first ODI since December 2020, scored 64 runs in 52 balls while Dhawan scored 97 runs in 99 balls. Shreyas Iyer scored 54 runs in 57 balls. Dhawan and Gill were run out in the 18th over, but in their innings, they hit many catchy shots. This was Gill’s first fifty in ODI cricket. At the same time, Dhawan, who played only in the ODI format, hit 10 fours and three sixes in his innings. India were once looking to cross 350 runs, but the middle order collapsed after Dhawan fell victim to a nervous ninety. Alzarri Joseph and Gudakesh Moti took two wickets for West Indies.

Captain Shikhar Dhawan misses out on a century
Dhawan has suffered a ‘nervous ninty’ for the seventh time in his career. Shikhar, playing only in the ODI format, was leading India for the second time in his career as regular captain Rohit Sharma was rested for the series. In the last series against England, Dhawan, who failed in both the matches except the first ODI, made no mistake this time and scored 97 runs in 99 balls. He missed by three runs. Together with Shubman Gill (64 off 52 balls), he added 119 runs in 106 balls for the first wicket.

Indian middle order looked weak again
India’s score at one time was 213 for one wicket, which became 252 for five. Sanju Samson once again missed the golden opportunity and was dismissed for 12 runs. On the other hand, Suryakumar Yadav (13) had to bear the brunt of playing a poor shot. Deepak Hooda made 27 and Axar Patel made 21 runs and added 42 runs for the sixth wicket to take India past 300 runs.
